XYLELLA FASTIDIOSA BACTERIA IS TRANSMITTED BY INSECTS THEN ATTACKS SOME TREES------------------ The FNSEA, have published yesterday, the FNPHP (National Federation of Horticultural Producers and Nurseries) FNPF (National Fruit Producers Federation), FOP (French Federation of Producers of Oilseeds and Protein crops) and Young farmers (JA) believe that "the situation is still not under control." Five professional agricultural organisations asking for "controls" and "prophylactic measures on imported plants in Corsica", to reduce the risk of spread of the killer bacterium Xylella fastidiosa plant.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This bacterium transmitted and dispersed by insects tackles different plant species (Vines, citrus, prunus, coffee, avocado, alfalfa, oleander, oak, maple, etc.). It leads to massive dieback of certain species of economic interest (citrus, vines, olive trees). This bacteria settles in the xylem of plants and prevents the movement of liquids, the early symptoms are so close to wilting.------------------------------------------------------------------------WHERE DOES XYLELLA FASTIDIOSA ATTACK ? The disease was absent from the European Union until its importation into Italy in October 2013. It is currently confined to the Puglia region (southern tip of Italy). It is present in many third countries (or regions of third countries), mostly in the Americas: Mexico, USA (mainly Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, etc), Canada (Ontario), Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil (including Bahia, Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, etc), Paraguay, Venezuela. For now, there is no curative control means against this plant pathogenic bacterium, if not the uprooting and destruction of infected plants and control of insect vectors (further monitoring and treatment insecticides).
