USPA NEWS - EU leaders met on 23 and 24 June 2022 in Brussels, to discuss the wider Europe, the latest developments in relation to Russia’s war against Ukraine and the EU membership applications from Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia.
On 23 June 2022, the European Council adopted conclusions on Ukraine, the membership applications of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia, Western Balkans and external relations. Ukraine, Moldova and and Georgia submitted applications for EU membership following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, of 24 February 2022. The 23th of June 2022, marks a historic moment of EU’s history and Ukraine, as the conflict intensifies. member governments decided to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova.

Similarly, two Northern other countries Sweden and Finland have expressed their intent to join NATO, which would result in 23 out of 27 EU Member States (Austria, Cyprus, Ireland and Malta do not belong to NATO’s military club) being NATO members or aspirants. Indeed, the 27 Member States, have valid by consensus, recognized to Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidate to the EU. As for Georgia, it was granted "a European perspective" which will still have to carry out reforms before obtaining this status.

PRES. OF EUROPEAN COUNCIL TWEETED IT IS A HISTORIC MOMENT OVER UKRAINE’S ADMISSION TO EU “A historic moment,” European Council President Charles Michel tweeted right after the decision. “Today marks a crucial step on your path towards the EU.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also tweeted this moment to be historic, as far as Ukraine’s new relations with EU, proud an glad of this membership “Sincerely commend EU leaders’ decision at #EUCO to grant Ukraine a candidate status” it as “a unique and historical moment” in Ukraine-EU relations, he tweeted. As for Ursula Von Der Lyen, the President of the European Commission she also welcomed this double accession for Ukraine and Molodova to the EU and spoke of "a major moment, a very good day for the Europe". This decision "strengthens us all", "it strengthens Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia in the face of Russian aggression", she declared.
