JOSE BOVE THE FARMER REBEL ACTUAL MEP ECOLOGIST IS ANGRY ABOUT XYLELLA"S DISASTERS ON FRENCH CROPS---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'We must realise that we are facing a serious threat that can eradicate hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops and wild plants. Agriculture will be affected first, but other sectors will also be hit and I think especially tourism. The fight against this disease must be placed top priority by the Minister of Agriculture, Stephane Le Foll and his colleagues from the other member states of the European Union. The measures taken up to now are not sufficient to curb the spread of this bacterium. Europe needs to raise funds to enable farmers and researchers to work together to identify varieties more resistant to the Xylella. As I have repeatedly requested, the European Union must stop all plant material imports from other infected areas in the world to avoid the reach of other strains of this bacterium. Finally, farmers whose trees are attacked or destroyed must be compensated." Declaration of Jose Bove, French Green Party MEP---------------------------
